What PECB is

PECB examines candidates and issues personal credentials. Its lead auditor path has four grades, from Provisional Auditor to Senior Lead Auditor, and the grade you receive depends on your professional and audit experience. The same structure exists for implementers and for manager roles. PECB is accredited against ISO/IEC 17024. More background is on our Why PECB page.

What IRCA is

IRCA is the auditor register of the Chartered Quality Institute. Training organizations run auditor courses that CQI and IRCA have certified. After passing a course, you can apply to join the register at a grade that matches your audit experience, and you keep your registration through membership and continuing professional development.

PECB vs IRCA: how to choose

  1. Ask your target employer or certification body. If you want to audit for a specific certification body, its competence requirements decide. Some accept both, some name one.
  2. Look at your standard. For newer standards such as ISO/IEC 42001, or for regulations such as the NIS 2 Directive and DORA, check which body offers a course at all.
  3. Look at your role. If you implement or manage rather than audit, you need an implementer or manager path.
  4. Look at your region and sector. Recognition varies by country and industry. Job adverts in your market are a good guide.
  5. Compare the full cost. Include the course, the exam, the application and the yearly fee to keep the credential.

PECB vs IRCA: what is the same

Both routes teach auditing against the same ISO standards, using the audit principles of ISO 19011. Both grade auditors by experience and require continuing professional development. Neither is required by ISO, and neither replaces audit experience: a lead auditor course qualifies you to start building audit hours, not to lead audits on day one.

PECB vs IRCA in short

The PECB vs IRCA decision is rarely about quality. Both are credible. It is about which one your employer, your certification body and your market recognise, and whether the body offers your standard and your role. Ask first, then enrol.

Frequently asked questions

Is a PECB lead auditor certificate recognised?

Yes. PECB is a certification body for persons and is accredited against ISO/IEC 17024, the international standard for bodies that certify people. Its credentials are used worldwide. Whether a particular employer or certification body accepts it for a particular role is their decision, so check before you enrol.

Is IRCA better than PECB?

Neither is better in general. IRCA has a long history in auditor registration and is well known in quality and in the United Kingdom. PECB covers more standards, including newer ones such as ISO/IEC 42001, and offers implementer and manager paths as well as auditor paths. In the PECB vs IRCA choice, what matters is your target employer, sector and standard.

Can I hold both?

Yes. Holding both settles the PECB vs IRCA question for some auditors, especially when they work with several certification bodies that have different preferences.

Does ISO require a specific auditor certification?

No. ISO publishes the standards and does not certify auditors. Certification bodies set competence requirements for their auditors under ISO/IEC 17021-1, and each decides which training and credentials it accepts.
